Notes from Donna
•Programmatic Highlight: 2nd Grade Thanksgiving Day Parade.
•Project involves math/coding/art/mapping/reading/writing/Language Arts.
•Girls will read a book about Tony Sarg, who created the first balloons for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in 1927.
•The girls will then plan a route for their parade (requires measuring doorways so balloons will fit). They will design many routes for their parade but decide on one. They will build a robot to make sure the route works.
•In Art class, the girls will be grouped in 2s and 3s and each group will pick out a theme for their balloon. They will need to decide on the size of balloons as they can’t be too big or too small as they will flop over. They will design their balloon and attach a stick to the balloons. The practice run is Monday afternoon of Thanksgiving week. The final parade will end at the all student Thanksgiving assembly 10am on Tuesday of Thanksgiving week. 2nd grade parents will be invited to the Monday practice round or the final. That date is to be decided. This is 3rd year of the 2nd graders creating parade balloons. This is the second year including a parade.
•3rd Grade Field Trip to Highland Orchards (October 30th).
•This field trip starts off a social studies unit about natural resources.
•The girls will go on a hayride and watch the production of applesauce. This will lead into discussions at school about resources such as when they are in excess or constrained and how that can affect the cost of an apple.
•The students will create on google slides demonstration of farm to table examples - oranges to orange juice, wheat to cereal etc.
•Blocks and Mud Kitchen for Prek and K are here. The girls LOVE them. Donna will send pictures that we can post on social media if we would like.
•Health Screening (vision/hearing/weight) require by the state will take place at the school on November 12th. Parents only hear if their child fails the vision or hearing test.
•Lunch Dates officially start this week. There is a process that the girls must follow and Donna to send details.
•Mult-cult group is still getting organized for their once a month mix it up lunches so start time is tbd. The plan is still for this to be once every other month.
