Middle School Parent/Guardian Winter Coffee

Wednesday, January 19th – 9:00 AM

 

Middle School Overview – Cintra Horn – Director of Middle School

ERBSstandardized testing

  • Sessions given over 3 days. Shortened parliament, 1-2 testing sessions a day then back     into their normal schedule

  • Reasons for testing 

  • Snapshot of where the student is midway through the school year, it’s measured against  public schools and other independent schools like ours

  • Measures progress over time (5-8th grade) and can help us measure our progress as a school

  • Teaches students how to approach a timed test

  • Prepares them for the near future of standardized testing as they apply to college

  • Different sections

  • Verbal reasoning

  • Reading comprehension

  • Quantitative reasoning

  • Math I & II

Results – typically go out in April. Results are used as one factor in math placement

 

Collaborative Conferences – March 17th & 18th

  • Each student will have at least one collaborative conference for one of her subjects. Your daughter will be part of the conference.

  •  If there is something you want to bring up with the teacher not in-front of your daughter, email them ahead of time or say “I need a minute alone with the teacher”

 

The Social Institute

  • Programs offered to students through parliament and wellness classes

  • The Parent Toolkit has playbooks so you can research an app or platform that your child is using and understand how they work

  • Family Huddles Can be found in the parent toolkit. After they happen at school Cintra will let you know in the Friday email. 

 

Middle School Schedule Implementation

We are in a year where we are back to the 7 day week. We are going to be surveying student, teachers and parents on how the schedule has been working this year

 

Student Wellness

 

Raising awareness around Anxiety

  • February 9th -  showing  of the documentary “Angst” to grades 7th & 8th

  • 45 minutes in an assembly format, followed by an upper school student panel. Four girls will be sharing their experience of struggling with anxiety. 

  • Parent viewing on 2/16 (6:30-8:00) in person. Also followed by the student panel as well. It will conclude with Q&A session. 

 

AIS Parents’ Council

Nissa O’Mara – Parents’ Council President

  • Thank you for your support of our fall events. All our fall fundraisers did as well or better than the last time they were held in the fall of 2019

  • Nomination process – if you are interested in participating in any capacity, please self nominate or nominate a friend. We are looking for individuals to fill roles as class parents, event chairs and on the parents’ council executive committee

  • Descriptions of positions will be posted on the Parents’ council tab on AIS-ON

  • Feel free to reach out to nominations chair Mimi Greenly with questions 

Family Skating Night (1/22) – Philadelphia Skating Club in Ardmore – 5:30-7:30

  • Free to attend but please register ahead of time 

  • Fee for rentals

  • No food, drink or snacks allowed, everyone must be masked per skating club policy

Bryn Mawr Film Institute Movie Night – February 8th at 7:00: Screening of Mama Mia

  • Free to attend but must sign up in advance to reserve seats. Registration is capped at a little over 100 people, theater can hold 300 so you can be comfortably distanced

MS & US Staff Appreciation Lunch

  •  Grab and go box lunch. If you would like to contribute to the cost of the lunches there is a link on the parents council tab. $20 covers the cost of one lunch.

  • Planning Meeting: February 2nd at 672 at 6:45. Look for more information regarding this event in the PC monthly newsletter
